About New Lifestyle Secrets
www.NewLifestyleSecrets.com was started by, Sandro Marino. A near death head trauma survivor who was fortunate enough to get a second lease on life. On July 19th, 1992 in the town of Mammoth Lakes, California, Sandro was struck by a Ford Bronco truck head on while he was riding his mountain bike. Sandro was only taking a short ride from his home to meet up with some friends down the street, so he decided not to wear his new helmet, a near death mistake. He suffered 2 Subdural Hematomas which would have killed him unless he had an immediate emergency craniotomy. Mammoth didn't have the facility nor the doctors to perform his life or death surgery so he he was flown by Life-Flight from the Mammoth Lakes airport to Reno, Nevada for the critical surgery.
Miraculously surviving the travel and 4 long hours of intracranial bleeding before the life saving surgery, Sandro had made it to the operation room where the operation was performed. He miraculously survived that too, but he was in critical condition and had slipped into a coma.
Sandro was held in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and the Doctor's prognosis, needless to say was not good due to the severity of the trauma. They were not certain of him surviving even a few days much less him coming back as the Sandro everyone used to know. Over a week had passed before Sandro had come out of his coma, unable to move or speak and without 30% of his cranium which was removed to gain access to the hematomas and give the brain room for the swelling. He had lost 40 pounds of body weight due to the severe muscular atrophy. Sandro was a ski instructor during the prior winter season and had taken up rock climbing and of course mountain bike riding prior to his accident. He was an extraordinary athlete and being as healthy as he was surely helped him with the grace of God, survive the deadly accident.
After 3 weeks in the Washoe Medical Center in Reno, Sandro was flown to St. Johns Medical Center in Oxnard near his mother for rehabilitation. He was moved into a transitional living home with other head trauma and stroke victims to go through a occupational rehabilitation program the helped trauma patients to relearn the "skills for the job of living" necessary for "living life to its fullest.", to reintegrate back into normal living situations, like managing the household, shopping and performing a multitude of other tasks with the help and guidance of live-in therapists.
Within 4 months Sandro had relearned to walk, but with an unsteady gate due to his distorted equilibrium. He regained his ability to speak, but it was slurred and he had a terrible loss for words, always searching for the right words to express himself. Sandro had many other areas of recovery in a short period of time, yet many deficits remained. As it was said by one doctor, "Once you touch the brain, you're never the same."
5 months after the accident, another surgery was performed to replace the bone flap that was removed from Sandro's cranium, because it took that long for the significant cerebral swelling to go down. Doctors warned that Sandro should not do any of the activities he used to do, snow ski, mountain bike ride, rock climb, surf or do any contact sports, basically most of the activities in which were his passions and a big part of who Sandro was at the time. They also made aware that Sandro may not progress to the point of being independent anymore and could be legally under the guardianship of his parents for life! Not what Sandro nor his family wanted to hear!
The fact that doctors informed Sandro and his family that his life would not be an ordinary one didn't stop Sandro from going above and beyond everyone's expectations and go on to living an extraordinary life! Since he was released from what little rehabilitation they offered at the transitional living center, Sandro ...to be continued!
